This gut renovation of a Manhattan loft for a single family was designed to realize the potential for open living spaces throughout the apartment. The original layout was composed of rooms totally separate from each other. Entry, living, dining, office, and kitchen spaces flow seamlessly together in the new layout, separated only by various millwork elements. Steel ornamental gates and a fixed screen enclose the elevator entrance hall from the rest of the unit, but bring light from the street windows into the previously dark kitchen. The patterns reference classic Indian jali screens, fabricated using modern technology, laser cut and layered from steel sheets, custom dipped in a dark bronze finish.
